It’s 2001 in Estevan, Saskatchewan, Canada, where hockey rules and the only fun thing to do on a Friday night is either smoke weed and hang out in front of the 7-11 or smoke weed and cruise Main Street. Now, imagine such a shithole without weed. Such adversity made teenagers do some pretty dumb shit to get their hands on the stuff, and this is the tale of one of those dumbass teenagers. RYLAND DANIELS (16) is a punk rock skater kid who recently quit hockey because his hockey-fanatic father bailed on him and his mom. BRODY BULLETSKI (18), the enforcer on Ryland’s team, didn’t take too lightly to this decision and vowed to make Ryland’s life a living hell. On the eve of a CJ Hadley party (where the who's who go to fight, fuck, or get fucked up), there wasn’t a gram of weed to be found in town. ASHLEY HUNTSMAN (17), Ryland’s stoner crush and the Junior class flirt, promises all of her attention at the party if Ryland can get his hands on some weed. So Ryland does what any hormone-fueled teen boy would do: he lies and tells her he will definitely have weed at the party. On his way home, Ryland encounters Brody, who’s about to kick his ass until JANE FRANK (18), the life of the party and everybody's friend, saves Ryland…for now. Jane suggests they settle things once and for all by fighting at CJ’s party.
Ryland and his loud-mouthed best friend GARRETT A.K.A. G (17) grab some booze from Ryland's hilarious grandma VIOLET (75), and pick up their friend JAEKWAN MILLER A.K.A. MILLER (17), a loveable metrosexual, before setting off on their mission to find weed so Ryland can get the girl and hopefully smooth things over with Brody. Their first stop was a bust when the dealer known as UNCLE DAVE (40s), a stoned Jason Segel-type, tries to show them up by taking a knife-hoot through his nose before puking all over the last of the town's weed. Miller’s covered in puke and wants to go home, but Ryland convinces him to press on. Before Uncle Dave puked, he mentioned a grow op on Range Road 47, so the boys crack open a beer and go boonie-cruising to find it. After being shot at by a farmer and Miller being sprayed by a skunk, surely you’d think the night would be over, but Ryland is dead set on his goal. He’s tired of backing down and running away. They call a friend in a nearby town who states he has weed, so the boys make their way. When they get on the highway, they’re immediately pulled over by the RCMP, but are saved by Miller’s stench. Despite being promised, their friend smokes all the weed before they arrive, and now the night is definitely over. Ryland has a run-in with Jane at a gas station. She gives him a bit of a pep talk and informs him about a party at a nearby indigenous reservation. Meanwhile, at the pump, G has a run-in with a truck full of Townies that doesn’t go so well. Now the boys are being chased out of town and manage to escape until the car slows to a halt. In the thick of it all, G forgot to put gas in the car. The boys argue as they push the car to the nearest town. G always seems to encourage the shit show, but tonight, Ryland is no different. They pull up to the nearest gas station, which is closed, but across the road is the KFC, where Jane told Ryland to look for her if he wants to attend the party. In hopes of getting help to gas up the car so they can go home, they’re taken to a house out on a reserve where there’s a party in full swing. Jane helps Miller get cleaned up, she sends someone to go gas up their car and bring it to the reserve, and has all the weed Ryland could possibly need. After a little fun and a much-needed pep talk from Jane, the boys are gassed up, lit up, and Ryland is ready to take on whatever may come when he arrives at the party. Re-energized, they hit the highway only to have their lives flash before their eyes as they swerve through a herd of cows on the highway. Now the car is really fucked, and G and Ryland get into a yelling match. Ryland is tired of G’s reckless behavior, and G blames the evening on Ryland’s deep-seated abandonment issues. Ryland punches G, fracturing the group. Ryland's badass grandma, Violet, randomly intercepts them on the highway on the way to CJ’s party. She gets the boys in her car and delivers a pep talk on standing up for oneself.
When they arrive at the party, Ashley quickly dismisses Ryland, exposing her shallow motives to get high. Backed by Jane and a reluctant but present G and Miller, Ryland steps into the clearing to fight Brody. Unleashing years of repressed anger and emotions, Ryland holds his own in the fight and lands massive hits, but Brody ultimately overpowers him and wins. Despite the physical loss, Ryland earns the town's respect and unifies his friendships by apologizing to G. The next Monday at school, a confident, bruised Ryland walks past a regretful Ashley and shares a mutual nod of respect with Brody, finally freeing him from his past.
